To find a doctor you might want to have some notes down that are necessities for your doctor. This will help clear your thoughts so you can find a doctor that is exactly what you want. Then you should ask your friends, relatives, or co-workers for recommendations. Find out why they like this particular doctor and see if it is what you have on your list or want in a doctor. It might also be a good idea to ask if there are any particular doctors that you should stay away from. Then if you find a particular doctor that you want to check out you may want to look at your stat/local board to make sure the physician is licensed. Look at your list and the doctors you want to check out and narrow your list to 3-4 doctors. Now you talk to the office staff, many times you can see the attitude of the doctor by the office staff. Now you can talk with the doctor, ask him/her if she/he can spare 10-20 minutes to talk to you so you can decide if you want to be a patient or not, but beware that some doctors will charge you for their time. Also be sure to notice how the environment is, for example, how the staff treat the patients or each other.

Talk to your doctor
Be sure to tell your doctor about any current and past health care issues or concerns. It’s important to share any information you can. Use the following as a base guild line of what information to give to your doctor whenever you have an appointment:
- Any symptoms you are having.
- Have your health history ready any time you see your doctor. You can create a “personal health journal” for yourself in a notebook, and bring it to your appointments so you will have everything you need.
- Personal information, including whether you are stressed or if your life is changing.
- Any medicines you are currently taking. Create a list of all your medicines you are taking and include it in your personal health journal. Include information about when and how often you take the medicine. You should also write down the strength of the medicine such as how many mg’s the dose is etc.
- Any side effects you have from your medicine(s), especially if it makes you feel sick or if you think you may be allergic to it.
- Any vitamins or herbal supplements you take which can effect other medications.
- Any x-rays, tests results or medical records you have can be brought with you to the appointment as well if you have access to them.
